Radius Platen – Graphite Care & Replacement
IMPORTANT: Do not use conditioning belts with radius platens! Conditioning belts are extremely abrasive and can wear through the graphite-coated canvas in just minutes. When used with regular sharpening belts, the graphite coating can last for years.
The good news: Graphite-coated canvas is a replaceable, inexpensive consumable. Wearing it out does not mean your radius platen is damaged.
How to Replace the Graphite
Carefully remove any remaining graphite coating. Lightly sand if necessary, being careful not to change the platen's shape.
Cut a new strip of graphite-coated canvas to fit your platen.
Glue the new graphite strip directly onto the platen.
Allow the adhesive to fully cure before use.
Where to Buy Graphite-Coated Canvas
We recommend SuperGrit.com, where graphite-coated canvas is available for approximately $3 per foot. It's also available on Amazon.
We typically purchase 4-inch-wide material and cut it crosswise into 1-inch strips.

Remember: Use regular sharpening belts with your ALXTHOR radius platen. Avoid conditioning belts to maximize the life of your graphite coating. Use you adjustable metal platen for conditioning belts.
